Aston Villa vs Chelsea live: Score and latest updates from the Premier League

  Reading time 1 minute

Steven Gerrard is facing a potentially decisive week in terms of his Aston Villa future after an inspired performance from Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga piled even more pressure on him.

Kepa made a couple of wonder saves and was equal to everything Villa threw at him in what ranked as one of the home side’s best performances of the season – but it did not spare Gerrard from a smattering of boos from his own fans.

The nature of Villa’s improved display meant Gerrard did not receive a full-on barrage of abuse from the stands, but the dissenting voices are growing with his team only scoring seven Premier League goals this season and sitting just a point above the bottom three.

Villa were 16th and two points above the relegation zone when Gerrard took over almost a year ago and with the club in exactly the same position and even closer to the drop zone, supporters are questioning why there has been no tangible progress.

Thursday night’s trip to Fulham already looks vitally important for Villa and Gerrard, ahead of the visit of Brentford next Sunday.
